Markets Matter

Sustainable, efficient and inclusive economic growth and wealth creation is a critical pre-requisite for addressing our generation’s sustainability challenge.

Realising Human Potential

Everyone has a right to realize their potential and to live free of poverty in a secure and sustainable world through having the capabilities to control their lives and contribute to society as responsible citizens. This is the essence of human development.

Human Rights Matter

The capabilities people need to control their lives are expressed as human rights: Rights to life and security; to an education and health services; to a sustainable livelihood and to have a voice in decisions affecting them.

Opportunity for All

Poverty is a state in which people are denied opportunities to acquire these capabilities, have little control of their lives and often have no voice in decisions which affect them. Poverty means too little income, too few assets, lack of access to basic services and opportunities and ongoing insecurity.

Our Actions Matter

Poverty is rooted in inequality, and in human action or inaction. Poverty can be made worse by natural disasters, human violence, oppression and environmental damage. Poverty can be maintained, deepened and broadened by ill considered policies and actions.

Accountability & Responsibility

Governments are ultimately accountable to their people for the protection of human rights. All society’s institutions – including NGO’s and corporations – should ensure their actions respect and uphold human rights.
